Connecticut Firefighters Battle Garage Fire

Feb. 19, 2008
Large explosions rocked the building, intensifying flames

BRIDGEPORT, CT - At approximately 1:00 p.m. on February 4, the Bridgeport Fire Department was dispatched to 235 Hewitt Street with a full assignment for a structure fire.

The first report found an eight-bay garage with heavy fire conditions extending to a 2-and-a-half story section of the building that contained auto parts and tires. Several vehicles stored in the garage were heavily involved.

There were also several large explosions that rocked the building and further intensified the flames.

During the height of the blaze, the rear of the structure collapsed causing the second floor to collapse into the first.

The building appeared to be used as a vehicle storage facility, with initial reports of the fire originating in one of the middle bays.

There were no civilian or firefighter injuries reported from the fire.
