Montgomery County, Md. firefighters battled a fierce blaze that damaged the former estate of the late ABC network news anchorman Howard K. Smith.

The first call for the fire in the Glen Echo area, received around 8:15 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11, indicated that the mansion style structure at 6450 Brookes Lane was well involved.

First arriving units found heavy fire in about half of the large home, which was under renovation. An aggressive interior attack was initiated, which was able to confine the fire to the area involved, with some additional extension into the large attic area.

Seven engines, four trucks, two heavy rescues, and a number of command staff, EMS units, and specialized equipment battled the blaze.
