Sept. 13, 2007
The heavy timber and brick building was constructed as a cotton mill in the 1830s.

A multi-alarm fire destroyed part of the former Wheaton Plastics Company located Mays Landing, N.J. on Sept. 10.

A park ranger called 9-1-1 about 6:15 p.m. after seeing smoke coming from the tower of the structure.

The heavy timber and brick building was constructed as a cotton mill in the 1830s.

Assistant Chief Dave Connelly arrived minutes after the dispatch, and requested a 100' aerial platform from the Cologne Vol. Fire Company. He then called for numerous mutual aid companies as the fire quickly progressed.

The building sat alongside Lake Lenape and a spillway, allowing for easy access for drafting which was accomplished by several large volume pumps. Crews were on the scene for several days for mop up.

The cause is under investigation.
