On Sunday, Sept 2, Newton fire alarm struck Box 55 for the area of 2271 Washington Street, for a building fire. While companies were responding, dispatchers advised it was a porch fire.

Upon arrival, Captain Roche reported heavy fire showing from a four-story wood frame apartment building. He quickly ordered a working fire assignment bringing Tower/Ladder-2. Firefighters found the fire had spread into the walls and roof area.

Chief Carvelli ordered a second-alarm bringing two more engines, a medic truck and the emergency response unit. Fire crews stretched numerous hand lines and attacked the fire. Firefighters from ladder companies conducted searches and ventilation. No occupants were located.

Interior crews reported the front porches were spongy, and believed the roof was in the same condition. Firefighters also removed the siding. The fire was under control around 10:43 p.m.

Newton paramedics provided water, and treated firefighters for minor injuries.

The fire remains under investigation by Newton Fire Department.
