North Carolina Firefighters Tackle Blaze

Aug. 22, 2007
Crews were rotated due to heat.

Fire departments from all over Gaston County were called to the old Cramerton High School Sunday around noon to find fire and smoke in the second and third floors of the newest part of the building.

Command was set up by officers from Cramerton Volunteer Fire Department. Ladder trucks as well as pumpers and tankers were called in from surrounding departments for manpower.

On entering the building, teams were sent to the second and third floors. Most of the fire was located on the third floor. Firefighters were rotated due to the extreme temperatures.

Two firefighters in different sections fell part way through the floor. One was transported to the hospital for heat exhaustion.

The main building was separated by a external stairwell which kept the fire from spreading to the older building. The blaze was under control in just a couple of hours.

Gaston County Fire Marshal and Cramerton Police are investigating.
