Crew Battles Fire in Alaska

KASILOF, Alaska - Just before noon, June 9, Central Emergency Services received a 911 call reporting a structure fire near Milepost 3.5 of Kalifornsky Beach Road here.

On arrival, the crew aboard CES Engine 4 reported smoke billowing from the structure and an "all hands" working fire.

The fire originated in a full basement and burned through the main floor of the structure and into the attic/crawl space.

Firefighters were forced out of the structure because of potential building collapse. They mounted a defensive suppression effort. Firefighters battled the stubborn fire for almost six hours before declaring it under control.

The structure and contents were a total loss. CES responded with 3 engines, 3 tankers, heavy rescue, a medic unit, ladder truck and support personnel. The city of Kenai responded mutual aid with an engine and two personnel.

No serious injuries were reported during the incident.
