BALTIMORE - A construction worker (seen in the first photo with the yellow hard hat on) was rescued a little before 6 p.m. on Monday April 16 after he had been trapped in a trench in a residential neighborhood of west Baltimore.

Emergency personnel from the Baltimore City Fire Department along with Maryland Occupational Safety and Health and several other agencies responded to the scene.

Officials say sewer crews dug a 10 foot trench on Saturday in the 2200 block of Koko Lane. It rained heavily on Saturday and Sunday. Early Monday afternoon, the walls of the trench, which were not reinforced, collapsed and a worker was trapped up to his waist.

The worker was calm and stayed awake and alert throughout the nearly six hour ordeal. Crews brought in a portable heater and set up an air vent to blow air on the trapped victim.
