Fire Consumes New York Garage

April 10, 2007
The fire was sparked by the homeowner who was working with machinery inside the garage.

The Glenwood, N.Y. Fire Company was alerted for a garage fire on Walnut Street in the Glen Head community about 5 p.m. on March 28. While units were en route, several additional callers reported a large fire, and a second alarm was transmitted.

The first-arriving units found a large two-bay garage well-involved. The first engine on scene stretched a 2 1/2-inch handline and a 1 3/4-handline. Incoming units stretched additional handlines to battle the fire and protect the exposures. The fire was contained in about 45 minutes.

Mutual aid was requested from the Roslyn Fire Companies for a F.A.S.T. team and an engine from Sea Cliff to cover the empty stations.

The Nassau County Fire Marshall HazMat Team was requested to the scene to secure several flammable gas cylinders that were damaged or exposed to the extreme fire conditions inside the structure.
