On April 8, Stations 5 (Hebron), 9 (Mardela) and 74 (Delmar) were alerted for a building fire at the Barber Shop, a well known local landmark, located at 406 Main St.
Hebron Chief David Beach arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the two-story structure. The bulk of the fire was located in the rear. The first arriving Engine 507 was ordered to drop a five-inch line at the hydrant and place a 1-3/4 inch line in service through the back door.
Crews were immediately faced with heavy smoke and fire conditions when they entered the structure. Tower 5 arrived and began roof and horizontal ventilation. Several animals were found still inside the smoke filled structure. One dog was removed from the building and treated by Station 5 EMS personnel. However, several cats had already perished.
The fire was contained to a second-floor apartment. Approximately 75 personnel worked for about 45 minutes to bring the fire under control. For another 90 minutes, they performed overhaul.
Deputy Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office Matt Stevenso is investigating.
David Boog opened his shop in 1989. Fire damage was estimated from $100.000 to $150.000. Main Street was closed for approximately three hours during the alarm.
