New Jersey FFs Tackle Massive Blaze

April 5, 2007
A third alarm was hit within 20 minutes.

Bayonne NJ-- On April 1, Bayonne Fire Department was dispatched to 39 W. 18th St, at 3:23 am for a reported basement fire. First units were met with a heavy fire condition in a row of two-story attached frame. As the group battalion chief assessed the situation, he knew right away he needed more manpower. On this tour, however, the city had closed an engine and ladder company. So, he requested mutual aid from Jersey City Fire Department.

A third alarm was hit within 20 minutes, bringing more Jersey City companies to the fire. The blaze spread to four buildings on the narrow one-way street.

Bayonne had all seven engine companies and three ladder companies at the scene. Others involved were a battalion chief and safety battalion.

The fire was under control shortly after 6 a.m.
