Accident in Delmar Delaware Closes Divided Highway

Jan. 30, 2007
Maryland State Police had traffic on Route 13 shut down for about 20 minutes, which unfortunately caused major traffic backups for miles.

On Saturday, January 27, Wicomico County 911 dispatched Station 74 (Delmar) for a personal injury accident in the area of Leonard's Mill Pond in the south bound lanes of Route 13. Seconds after that dispatch alerted Station 74 for a second accident with injuries in the same area but in the north bound lanes of Route 13.

As 74 Command (S. Johnson) approached the area he was confronted with very heavy traffic and the first accident in the north bound lane. He found that this was the most serious one and diverted Rescue 74 to this location and had Engine 74-3 respond to the other accident in the south bound lanes. The crew of Rescue 74 began to stabilize the vehicle and extricated the occupant by removing the passenger side door. This was done in about six minutes and the patient was transferred over to Paramedic 2 (Salisbury) and transported to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

A small child in the other vehicle was also transported. Scene safety was secured by Traffic Control 74 and Maryland State Police had traffic on Route 13 shut down for about 20 minutes, which unfortunately caused major traffic backups for miles.
