The Swanton, Vt.Fire department battled a fire at an abandoned apartment building Jan. 12, 2006. It happened on Route 78 around 2:30 a.m.

Upon their arrival, firefighters reported seeing sparks and smoke coming from the building. High winds made it hard to extinguish the blaze, and sparks from the fire ignited several small grass fires.

Several other fire companies were called in to the scene. Investigators believe the fire could be arson, because the building did not have electricity. Route 78 was closed for about five hours as fire crews battled the blaze.
