Multi-Casualty Accident in Laurel, Delaware

Due to a large number of patients found the incident was upgraded to a Level 1 MCI bringing additional ALS and BLS units to the scene.

On October 4th at approximately 5:20 pm the Laurel Fire Department, along with Sussex County EMS and Trooper 2, was dispatched for a motor vehicle collision at Hardscrabble Road and East Trap Pond Road. Command 81 (Laurel Assistant Chief Rob Givens) arrived and found a two vehicle accident with entrapment. BLS and ALS units arrived and began triage and patient care.

Due to a large number of patients found the incident was upgraded to a Level 1 MCI bringing additional ALS and BLS units to the scene. Engine 2 arrived, stabilized the vehicles and began extrication. Two patients were rapidly extricated from the car and transferred to awaiting EMS, one to the awaiting helicopter. Rescue 81 arrived and crews assisted with additional extrication by conducting a roof flap and utilizing a ram to extricate the rear passenger. A total of 7 patients were transported to area hospitals.

All three patients from the car had serious, but not life threatening, injuries. The four in the van were all assessed as having BLS injuries. The incident was placed under control at 6:11 pm and the last units were placed in service at 6:37 pm.
