At 5:19 AM, Monday, May 17, 2004, the Seattle Fire Department was alerted to an apartment fire at 709 Boylston Ave. E in the Capital Hill District of Seattle.

Upon arrival, Engine 25 and Ladder 10 were confronted with heavy fire & smoke from a second-story apartment of a three-story building.

Firefighters found tenants hanging off of decks and others climbing down from third floor decks to lower floors. One person jumped from the second floor before firefighters could reach him. He was transported via ambulance to the hospital with an ankle injury. Four others were transported to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries and are all reported to be in stable condition.
