On April 20, 2004, the Cheshire, Connecticut Fire Department responded to a MVA involving a tractor trailer carrying empty cardboard beer cases and a city transit bus.

Cheshire Fire Department responded with 5 engines and a heavy rescue unit. Upon arrival, the incident commander requested mutual aid from the City of Waterbury, and the Town of Wolcott to the scene.

Limited accessibility and the fact that there is major highway construction going on in this area made suppression efforts all that much more difficult. The fire was under control in 1 hours.

Due to the heat impingement on the roadway, and the bridge that was involved, the highway was closed for the majority of the day and was reopened for the evening rush hour. The bridge did not sustain any structural damage.
