Rhode Island Crews Fight Recycling Plant Blaze

At least 300 vehicles were destroyed

On Sunday around 13:30, Johnston R.I. firefighters were dispatched to Metals Recycling at 89 Celia Street for reports of a fire.

The Battalion Chief requested to 4th Engine while en route due to a large header visible for miles. On arrival, a "Code Red" was transmitted for multiple vehicles five high and 20 deep well involved at the corner of Celia & Carl Streets.

The first in Engine utilized the deck gun while Ladder 1 setup a ladder pipe.

Additional manpower was dispatched shortly after arrival due to multiple exposure and water problems. Companies worked for hours in a surround and drown operation working with 3 Ladder Pipes and multiple large lines while two large front-end loaders lifted stacks of burning vehicles and moved them to be extinguished by firefighters and further relocated on the lot.

Several minor injuries were reported. About 300-400 vehicles were destroyed. Mutual aid to the job was North Providence with Engine 2, Ladder 1, Battalion 1, Providence Engine 7, Engine 6, Tower 2, Cranston with Engine 2, Tower Ladder 2, Special Hazards, & Air Supply, The Providence Canteen responded to rehab members.
