Fire crews from Normal battled a smoky, stubborn blaze that gutted an apartment house in the afternoon hours of Aug. 14 at the south end of the town.

The house at 1410 S. Main St. is owned by nearby BroMenn Regional Medical Center, and was leased to two tenants that moved in six days ago. The tenants were not home at the time the fire broke out. An attached smaller building that had housed several businesses over the years, was being used by the hospital for storage.

One firefighter went to BroMenn with minor injuries, and a 1-1/2 year old dog named Phoenix was rescued from the basement and revived at the scene. Damage is estimated at $80,000, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
