Virginia Firefighters Battle Structure Fire

July 18, 2008
The man had been downstairs and the youth upstairs asleep.

A column of smoke filled the afternoon sky on July 12 and tones sounded at 3:42 p.m. -- Prince George, Va. crews were on the way to 4506 Megan Ct. Responding were Prince George, Hopewell and Fort Lee.

Upon arrival, crews found fire through the roof and venting, with extensions to an attached garage.

A man and his son, who were inside the home at the time, were alerted by a smoke alarm. The man had been downstairs and the youth upstairs asleep. Officials said the results could have been serious had the residents not evacuated quickly, because of the rapidly spreading fire.

The resident reported that when the smoke alarm alerted them, smoke was seen coming out of a closet.

The cause is under investigation.
