New York Crews Battle Raging Fire

An occupant jumped from a second floor window

Firefighters in the Village of Hempstead, N.Y. were greeted by a huge fireball on their arrival at this house fire on East Graham Avenue in the early morning hours of Thursday June 12. The two-story, partially boarded up home was almost totally engulfed in flames around 4 a.m.

The lone occupant escaped serious injury by jumping from a second floor window to the ground. He was transported by Nassau Police ambulance to NUMC suffering from second and third degrees burns on his hands and legs.

Engine companies stretched two and a half inch hand lines to combat the volume and intensity of fire.

Truck companies removed exterior plywood from several windows and then assisted with the push into the building.

Several surrounding communities were called for mutual aid and other local agencies also assisted. Nassau County Fire Marshals were summoned to the scene to investigate.
