Person Killed in New Jersey Fire

A person was killed in a house fire in Cape May County, N.J.

The Marmora Volunteer Fire Company and the Upper Township Rescue Squad of Upper Township, Cape May County, N.J.  were dispatched to U.S. 9 in the Palermo section of the township for a reported structure fire.

Firefighters found a 75’ x 35’ two and half story wood frame post and beam structure single-family house fully involved with fire.

Attached to that structure was a 20’ x 40’ antiques workshop, and less than 10’ away was a 20’ x 80’ barn used to store those antiques.


Firefighters immediately attempted to stop the spread of the fire to the attached workshop and the adjacent barn with success.

Numerous mutual aid companies from throughout Cape May and Atlantic Counties were brought to the scene as there were no hydrants in the area.  The fire was contained by using a water shuttle.

Firefighters searching the structure discovered the body of the resident of the property.

The fire is under investigation by the New Jersey State Police, New Jersey Division of Fire Safety, and the Cape May County Fire Marshal.
