Fire Consumes Vacant Tenn. Furniture Store

Jan. 21, 2013

Five departments from Kentucky and Tenessee battled a raging fire in an abanoned furniture store in downtown Paris on Jan. 9.

The 911 center received a call at 6:20 p.m. and units found the one-story building full engulfed.

At the height of the fire flames shot 30 feet into the air and the radiant heat could be felt for two blocks.

Eight master streams, two deck guns, and a Telesqurt were used to knock down the fire by 8 p.m.

Firefighters from Paris, Oakland, Puryear and Springville, Tenn. fire departments responded. Crossing the state line, members of the Calloway County Fire Department responded too.

The building was a total loss, but a neighboring office was spared.

The fire marshal is investigating the cause and suspect that transients who were seen in building previously may be to blame.
