Photo Story: Driver Escapes Burning Big Rig in N.C.

Firefighters from Red Oak and Battleboro fire departments were dispatched to a reported truck fire on I-95 at 144 mile marker on Sept. 13. While enroute companies were updated with a report of some type of explosion.

Red Oak units reported a large column of black smoke from one mile away.

The first units on scene reported heavy fire showing from a tractor-trailer.

Firefighters used  four 1 3/4-inch hoselines to fight the blaze.

Water was supplied  from tankers from both companies and had the fire under control in 45 minutes.

The driver said that he pulled to the side of the road and attempted to extinguish the fire but was unsuccessful and called 911.

He told  firefighters that he was transporting a shipment of goods from New Jersey to Florida when he smelled smoke and saw flames from  his vehicle.

The cab of the truck was destroyed and part of the trailer and contents were burned.

20 firefighters and Nash County EMS unit  were at the scene. No one was injured
