A 38-year-old man was died after he was trapped in the burning St. Paul basement on Nov. 24. Eight others escaped the blaze after the were alerted by smoke alarms.
St. Paul firefighters were called to Lexington Parkway North for a house fire with a person trapped around 7:45 a.m.
Companies found heavy smoke from both levels of the one-story home and initiated an interior attack with multiple handlines.
With the fire knocked down in the basement, companies found the victim.
Crews continued to chase fire in the walls and to the attic before placing it under control.
Officials said the cause of the fire was careless smoking.
Four engines, two ladders, two squads, a medic unit and two chiefs responded to the fire scene.
