Careless smoking is blamed for a fire that took the life of a 30-year-old man in St. Paul on Jan. 12. 

Firefighters found fire shooting from several windows on the first floor of a five-unit townhome around 4 a.m.

Squad 2 firefighters began evacuating adjacent units while Engine 14's crew deployed a pre-connect through the front door and began knocking down the fire.

A crew found the deceased body of a man near where the fire started.

Backup hoselines were used to knock down fire extension in adjacent units while crews finished their searches.

Ten units responded to the scene and no other injuries were reported.
