Units were dispatched to a kitchen fire in a Dix Hills home and found heavy fire engulfing the rear of the home.

Firefighters spent four hours battling a house fire in Dix Hills on March 1.

Just after 3 p.m., the Dix Hills Fire Department was activated for a kitchen fire.

First arriving units were on scene in minutes and found heavy fire conditions coming from the rear of the home.

An aggressive interior attack was initiated, but firefighters were ultimately forced from the building due to unsafe conditions and the extreme amount of fire.

Under the command of Chief Bill Stio, more than 35 firefighters from Dix Hills worked to extinguish the blaze with assistance from the Deer Park, Greenlawn, and Huntington Manor fire departments.

During the fire the Commack Fire Department provided backup fire coverage for the community, while EMS coverage was provided by the Melville Fire Department and Huntington Community First Aid Squad.

The residents escaped the fire unharmed.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
