Photo Story: N.C. Crews Tackle Tobacco Barns Fire

Shorty after 12 :15 p.m. on Aug. 21, fire departments from Edgecombe County, Rocky Mount City and Nash County were dispatched to 2000 block of Leggett Road for  a large group of tobacco shed barns that were on fire.

Fire companies from West Edgecombe, Heartsease, Battleboro Community, Rocky Mount City Engine 5, and Edgecombe County Rescue Squad  responded.

First arriving  firefighters found  two large tobacco sheds barns fully involved.

It took over an hour to bring the blaze under control .

Edgecombe Rescue supplied rehab to the 30 firefighters on the scene as temperatures hit the mid 90s.

The barns were full of tobacco being dried and cured. They were loaded on large metal racks that had to be removed one by one to extinguish.

Firefighters remained on scene for some time for overhaul operations.

The exact cause of the fire is unknown but is not suspicious and no injuries were reported.
