Photo Story: Fire Consumes Vacant Kan. Home

Jan. 8, 2015
The Louisburg Township Rural Fire Department called for assistance as flames destroyed one-story home.

Three departments responded to contain flames that swept through an Elk City home on Dec. 29.

At 10:35 a.m., the Louisburg Township Rural Fire Department was paged to a reported  structure fire.

Responding personnel noted a visible heavy column of smoke and they promptly asked for mutual aid from Montgomery County Fire, which responded a Quick Attack and Class A pumper from the Independence Rural Fire Division.

Arriving units reported a fully involved one-story, wood-frame dwelling with an attached addition. It was reported that the dwelling was vacant.

Crews went to a defensive attack and protected endangered exposures on the D side of the home.

Upon arrival, the Independence quick attack unit stretched to the B/C corner and started an exterior attack while the pumper laid in with LDH to the A side of the structure.

Handlines were stretched and placed in defensive positions.

Upon collapse of the roof, the pumper's master stream was brought to bear which allowed a quick knock down of the remaining fire.

Crews were on scene for approximately 90 minutes.

Also on scene were the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office and an ALS medic unit from the City of Independence.

The cause is listed as suspicious and is under investigation.
