A mayday was called on May 13 after large bales of cotton fell and pinned a Fort Worth firefighter.

Engine 5 was dispatched to an odor of smoke in the 700 block of Missouri Avenue around 2 a.m.  They discovered smoke showing from a one-story building that stored cotton. An interior attack was initiated.

As the crew moved to find the seat of the fire, a large bale of cotton fell, trapping the lieutenant from Engine 5. A mayday was called and Rescue 14 was deployed as the rapid intervention crew.

The firefighter was quickly located and removed from the structure and suffered a leg injury. He was transported by MedStar to the hospital.

Firefighters knocked down the fire, which was held in check by sprinklers.

A crew cut the exterior wall to access the stored cotton and it was removed to the street to douse and smoldering fires.

Firefighters remained on scene for several hours to overhaul the scene.
