Photos: General Alarm Called for PA Mill Fire

Aug. 26, 2016
Several fire departments responded to the Stewart Silk Mill complex in Easton.

Firefighters remained at the scene for 24 hours after fire destroyed the Stewart Silk Mill Complex in Easton on Aug. 15.

The City of Easton Fire Department responded to 620 Coal Street around 11:15 am and found heavy fire in a section of the old mill that was two stories and measured approximately 100 by 300 feet.

An immediate call for all three platoons was made, with assistance from Wilson Borough for a aerial and an engine. Within several minutes of that call, a special call went out for two additional aerials from Palmer Municipal and Nancy Run. Additional engines were dispatched from Palmer and Forks Twp. East Allen Twp. and Easton EMS established rehab areas on both sides of the mill. Crews from Forks Twp. and the City of Bethlehem manned Easton's central Station while the fire department was on scene at the mill.

Approximately 100 firefighters spent more than four hours attempting to control the flames in a section of the building that had previously collapsed.

Easton fire crews spent the next 24 hours controlling hot spots until a local contractor could tear down the rest of the mill.

No cause has been determined and no injuries were reported.
