CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA, April 30, 2010 –   Non-residential fires in the United States accounted for 112,000 fires, more than 3.8 billion dollars worth of damage, and 120 deaths, according to the latest annual data from the U.S. Fire Administration.  Badger, a leading manufacturer of fire suppression products, has launched a new fire extinguisher line ideally suited for commercial and industrial applications that handle, transport, process or store flammable liquids and gases. High Flow fire extinguishers exceed the NFPA-10 recommendations for Class B obstacle, pressure, gravity and three dimensional fires.

"Badger's new High Flow fire extinguishers release more than one pound of extinguishing agent per second, enabling customers to suppress a fire faster," said Sean Curley, vice president of sales for Kidde Residential and Commercial.  Badger is owned by Kidde Residential and Commercial, which is part of UTC Fire & Security and a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX)

The new High Flow fire extinguishers are available in an ABC multipurpose unit, as well as a unit containing the Purple-K dry chemical agent.  Both units feature heavy duty discharge hose assemblies, plated brass valves, stainless steel levers, large pull-pins, and easy-to-read two-piece nameplates.  The High Flow extinguishers are available in 10 and 20 pound units, come equipped with a six year product warranty, and are approved by both the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and Underwriter's Laboratories (UL).

"Badger is dedicated to providing quality fire safety products for any type of fire situation that may arise," said Curley.  "Large obstacle fires may be more challenging than traditional fires, but our High Flow fire extinguisher line is another example of our ability to develop quality products that cater to our customers' specific needs."

Having a fire extinguisher within reach could add precious time to escape an emergency situation or minimize the damage to property. Always check the gauge on fire extinguishers monthly.

The experts at Badger recommend the following tips when using a fire extinguisher:

  • Notify the fire department before attempting to extinguish the fire.
  • Use your extinguisher only to keep a small, smoldering, contained fire from growing or to create a safe pathway to exit the building.
  • Read the instructions and become familiar with how to operate a fire extinguisher BEFORE a fire breaks out.
  • Remember the "PASS" system:
      • Pull the pin. Hold unit upright.
      • Aim at the base of the fire.
      • Squeeze lever.
      • Sweep from side to side.
