Pierce Fleet Grows to 20 Vehicles At Wyoming's Fremont FPD

District encompasses 6,000 sq. mi.; at least 60% of response calls are wildland related

APPLETON, Wis. (Oct. 9, 2012) – Pierce Manufacturing, an Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE:OSK) company, now has a total of twenty commercial pumpers on duty with the Fremont County Fire Protection District (FPD) located in Wyoming’s Fremont County. The newest addition includes three pumpers and four tankers. The vehicles provide support for the District’s volunteer firefighting force, where 60 to 70 percent of the response calls are wildland related.

“The Pierce commercial pumper is our firefighting vehicle of choice, and we are very happy with the product,” said Craig Haslam, Fremont County FPD fire chief. “Being able to standardize our fleet around Pierce has enabled our volunteers to operate much more effectively and efficiently. If a firefighter from one battalion is required to shift to a different vehicle during an emergency, they will be very familiar with its operation.”

“Pierce firefighting vehicles are uniquely designed and customized to meet the emergency response requirements of all of our customers, whether in big cities or the wide open spaces of rural Wyoming,” said Jim Johnson, Oshkosh Corporation executive vice president and president, Fire & Emergency. “Wildland and urban interface fires in the western U.S. have been especially fierce in 2012. We are proud to support the firefighting efforts of the Fremont FPD.”

The three pumper vehicles are identically equipped with a 380 hp engine, seating for five firefighters, a top-mount pump panel, a 1,000 gallon water tank, a 1,250 gpm pump, and the Husky® 3 foam system. The four dry side tanker vehicles each feature a 2,000 gallon water tank, a 10-inch rear electric dump valve, seating for three firefighters, roll-up compartment doors, a 1250 gpm pump, and the Husky 3 foam system. One of the four tanker vehicles is equipped with the Pierce® Hercules® compressed air foam system (CAFS).

“When we began to spec our fleet, we got firefighters together from throughout the district and came up with our key requirements, and we were able to get many of the things we wanted while staying within our budget,” adds Chief Haslam. “And, as we have ordered additional trucks, Pierce and our dealer, Front Range Fire Apparatus, have kept us apprised of developments and have adapted our trucks to incorporate new technologies.”

Fremont County is the second largest county in land size in the six Rocky Mountain states, and the Fremont Fire Protection District provides emergency services to 6,000 of the county’s 10,000 square miles. The District was formed into one organization in 1993 from twelve rural and small town fire departments. The Fremont County Fire Protection District’s 203 volunteer firefighters responded to a total of 460 incidents during the 2011 calendar year.
