Heart attacks are the leading cause of on-duty firefighter fatalities, with more than half of all firefighter fatalities attributed to them.
In an effort to change this alarming statistic, Cardioviva and the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) are teaming up to educate fire service and emergency medical technician (EMT) volunteers about the dangers of high cholesterol.
The announcement takes place in conjunction with the 25th Annual National Fire & Emergency Services Dinner & Seminars in Washington, D.C., May 8-9; and the NVFC’s 2013 Spring Meeting in Alexandria, VA, May 10-11.
“As emergency responders, firefighters and EMTs face stress and danger in their volunteer jobs. These heroes also juggle full-time careers, so staying healthy needs to fit into their busy schedules,” said Phillip C. Stittleburg, NVFC Chairman.“Working with partners like Cardioviva, whose mission is to help maintain healthy cholesterol levels, is a tremendous asset for the fire service community.”
Cardioviva, a natural health probiotic, and the NVFC provided free cholesterol screenings and nutrition and lifestyle education at the Congressional Fire Services Institute and NVFC events.
In the coming weeks, Cardioviva and the NVFC will launch a contest in search of Cardioviva Heart Health Champions to find volunteer firefighters and EMTs who want to inspire heart-healthy living.
