French prosecutors have ruled out foul play in the blazing inferno that engulfed the Notre Dame Cathedral in April.
Possibilities for the cause of the blaze that are still being investigated include a poorly stubbed-out cigarette butt or electrical problem, according to France 24.
French authorities have reportedly interviewed 100 witnesses in their efforts to figure out what happened on April 15 when the famed church, where construction began in 1163 and lasted nearly two centuries, went up in flames. While Notre Dame’s steeple and roof were destroyed in the spring, the structure itself was saved by firefighters.

A spokesman for the scaffolding company that had been doing construction on the cathedral at the time of the fire conceded workers sometimes smoked on the job, but didn’t think that was a factor in the tragedy.
French president Emmanuel Macron vowed to return the historic institution to its former glory within five years.
