Firefighters in a southeastern Michigan town near Pontiac rescued an elderly pilot after a private helicopter crash Monday afternoon.

The West Bloomfield Fire Department says in a Facebook post that crews from two fire stations were dispatched at 2:45 p.m. when the chopper went down along the Pontiac Trail in nearby Orchard Lake.

The pilot, whom WXYZ reports was a man in his 80s, was conscious and transported to an area trauma center with non life-threatening injuries.

Orchard Lake police said the man was forced to make a "hard landing," and the Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident.
