Minneapolis and St. Paul firefighters freed a man who was trapped in the trench he was working in collapsed Monday.

The incident happened at about 8 a.m. at a construction site in Minneapolis, WCCO-TV reports. That's when the trench collapsed, and the worker's foot became trapped under debris.

It took crews around three hours to rescue the worker from the trench. In order to keep the trench from continuing to collapse, firefighters needed to remove the wreckage by hand, according to WCCO.

Authorities told the TV station that rainy weather conditions most likely caused the accident, and the worker is expected to recover.
