A man working in a trench in an unincorporated area of Tustin died on Wednesday, Dec. 20, after the trench partially collapsed, authorities said.

Around 10:30 a.m., the victim was about 15 feet deep while working in the trench in the 9800 block of South Newport Boulevard when it collapsed in on him, Orange County Fire Capt. Sean Doran said in an interview with OC Hawk News. The man was pronounced dead based on injuries medical personnel could see and crews were working to get down into the trench.

The identity of the victim was not immediately available.

It was not clear what the man was working on in the trench or who he had was contracted with, Doran said.

Crews were working to build a temporary structure in the trench to retrieve the body Wednesday afternoon and hazmat crews were monitoring the air quality around the trench.
