Three Burned Tulsa Firefighters Remain Hospitalized

The firefighters sustained third-degree burns to small portions of their bodies that required skin grafts.

Eight firefighters who were injured in a fire at the Tulsa School of Arts and Sciences last week were all in good condition Wednesday, even though three of them remain in the hospital, the Tulsa Fire Department announced Wednesday evening.

One firefighter who was recently released returned to Hillcrest Medical Center's Alexander Burn Center on Monday to undergo a skin graft, Fire Capt. Stan May said.

Dr. Robert Kirk, attending physician at the Alexander Burn Center, released a statement through the Fire Department on Wednesday, saying that "the three firefighters who remain in the hospital sustained third-degree burns to small portions of their body that required skin grafts. All three patients are in good condition."

The other five firefighters who were burned in the Sept. 5 fire at the former Barnard Elementary School building, 2324 E. 17th St., are being treated on an outpatient basis, May said.

It is not yet known when they will return to duty, he said.

"All of the firefighters continue to respond positively to their individual courses of treatment and continue to improve," May said.

"The firefighters and their families wish to thank the citizens of Tulsa for their continued support during this very difficult time."

The investigation into the cause of the blaze should be completed by the end of the week, May said.
