June 5--A Los Angeles firefighter who suffered serious injuries in a fall during a training exercise this past weekend has died.
The Los Angeles Fire Department announced that firefighter Kelly Wong, who was with the department for two years, died at a local trauma center following the incident Saturday.
The LAFD says Wong fell from an aerial ladder while participating in the training exercise in downtown Los Angeles, and despite the heroic efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries Monday morning.
Wong was a 2015 graduate of the LAFD Recruit Academy and had earned accolades as the top academic performer in his class, according to the LAFD. He was assigned to Fire Station 92 in Rancho Park at the time of his death and was scheduled to transfer to Fire Station 9 serving downtown L.A. and skid row on June 12.
Wong is survived by his wife Danielle, his infant son Colton, his mother Ann, his mother-in-law and father-in-law Barbara and Michael Quinlan, and his sisters-in-law Nicole and Stephanie.
"I join the men and women of the LAFD in mourning Firefighter Wong's sudden passing," LAFD Chief Ralph Terrazas said in a release. "It is always a tragedy to lose one of our own, especially an accomplished individual who was still at the beginning of what was certainly going to be a promising career."
