Scabies Scare Shuts Down FDNY Station

Officials closed the Queens firehouse for disinfection after a firefighter was infected with the skin condition.

A Queens firehouse was closed Thursday after an FDNY firefighter was infected with scabies.

Cleaning crews were disinfecting Engine 320 in the Flushing neighborhood, as well as the equipment in the station, the New York Post reports. The FDNY had informed the more than 100 firefighters stationed at the firehouse about the scabies case, and the department provided them with a special cream to combat an possible infection.

Scabies is a contagious skin condition caused by a mite that burrows into the skin, laying eggs. Symptoms include severe itchiness and a pimple-like rash.
