An FDNY firefighter was one of four Americans killed when a bomb went off near a U.S. military base in Afghanistan on Monday.

Firefighter Christopher Slutman was a decorated, 15-year veteran of the fire department and a member of Ladder 27 in the Bronx, the New York Post reports. He also was a U.S. Marine.

Slutman, along with three other military members and a contractor, was in a convoy near the Bagram Air Base, north of Kabul, when a roadside bomb exploded. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the bomb.

According to the Post, Slutman received the Fire Chiefs Association Memorial Medal in 2014 after he saved a woman trapped in a burning South Bronx apartment. He was married and the father of three children.

“He was really a great guy," a source told the Post. "He loved being a fireman, and he was a real family man."
