Sept. 3, 2019
Joseph Manuse, a Gates Fire District fire prevention officer, was a Gates-Chili volunteer firefighter for nearly three decades.

A New York firefighter died after he was stung by a bee over the weekend.

Joseph Manuse, the fire prevention officer and public information for the Gates Fire District and a Gates-Chili volunteer firefighter for nearly 30 years, was stung while he was with family, the fire district said in a statement. Relatives started life-saving measures immediately, and he was taken to a local hospital, where he died.

Manuse, 48 and a contributor to Firehouse, worked for the fire district for 11 years, and he was responsible for creating community outreach programs about fire safety and prevention for schools, senior centers and businesses. As a Gates-Chili firefighter, he held the ranks of lieutenant, captain and assistant chief.

"Joe was an information resource for anyone with questions about fire safety, education, and codes …," the fire district said. "Joe was an amazing leader, teacher, firefighter and father. Please keep the Manuse family and Gates Fire District in your thoughts and prayers."

Funeral arrangements will be made at a later date the district added.
