TX Firefighter Faces Five Arson Charges

May 19, 2023
Punkin Center firefighter Aaron Arnold was a suspect after witnesses notified fire officials about a vehicle leaving the scene of one fire.

Investigators used electronic surveillance to build a case against a firefighter suspected of arson in Wichita County.

Aaron Arnold, 34, faces five counts of arson after a string of fires - many of which he responded to as a member of the Punkin Center Volunteer Fire Department.

Fire chiefs from Punkin Center and Electra reached out to the Wichita County sheriff's office last month after a series of suspicious fires, according to texomashomepage.com.

Witnesses at one fire scene told Punkin Center Fire Chief Matthew McAllister about a green pickup that was seen just before the fire.

McAllister realized that description fit Arnold's vehicle and noted that the fires occurred around 3 p.m., about the time he would leave work, according to investigators.

A warrant allowed investigators to track Arnold's truck and it showed him at the location of a May 13 fire involving several hay bales. The vehicle then returned to Arnold's home before going to the fire station when the fire was reported.

He was arrested on May 16 but did not cooperate with investigators. He later admitted to setting the May 13 and several others and investigators found evidence in his vehicles.

No injuries were reported in the fires.
