Illinois Deputy Fire Chief Collapses, Dies

A Hinsdale deputy fire chief collapsed and died on Sept. 20 while exercising inside the station toward the end of his shift.
A Hinsdale deputy fire chief collapsed and died on Sept. 20 while exercising inside the station toward the end of his shift, according to a department press release.

Deputy Fire Chief Mark Johnson, 55, was found unresponsive in the station's workout room and attempts by his colleagues to revive him proved unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead after being transported to Hinsdale Hospital.

The 24-year veteran of the department, serving many roles, and was one of its first firefighter/paramedics.

Johnson is survived by his wife and son.

Funeral Information

Visitation for Deputy Chief Johnson will be held on Thursday, Sept. 23 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Gibbons Elliston Funeral Home in Hinsdale.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 24 at Christ Lutheran Church in Clarendon Hills.
