SC Firefighter Dies after Being Struck at Scene

Lexington County firefighter/engineer Paul Quattlebaum, a 22-year fire service veteran, was struck by a semi at a crash scene Friday.

A veteran South Carolina firefighter died this afternoon after he was struck by a semi while checking on victims of a vehicle wreck.

Lexington County firefighter/engineer Paul Quattlebaum, a 22-year veteran, had been dispatched on a call at around 3:30 p.m. Friday and happened upon a vehicle wreck while en route to the original call with his partner.

The firefighters stopped to check on the people involved in the wreck when Quattlebaum was struck near Fairview Road in Lexington. He was taken to a hospital where he later died.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating.
