A Du Quoin firefighter was killed following a massive blaze Friday that tore through an antique mall and opera house, according to The Southern.

Firefighter Corey Shaw -- son of Fire Chief Bob Shaw -- was injured when a wall collapsed on him and was immediately airlifted to a St. Louis-area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The 22-year-old is a husband and father and had been a volunteer firefighter with Du Quoin since 2010.

"He cannot be forgotten," Police and Fire Commissioner Josh Downs said. "We will do our best in the community to rally around those who are most affected."

Crews responded to the fire at the Pinckneyville Antique Mall and the Kunz Opera House at approximately 3:30 p.m. The flames quickly spread and Shaw was near the east wall of the antique mall when it collapsed, officials told the newspaper.

A local business owner who witnessed the fire said it appeared to start from the rear of the antique mall and that after firefighters knocked out a front window, flames began shooting out from the inside of the structure.

Pinckneyville Fire Chief Jim Gielow told the newspaper that it would be days before the cause of the fire could be determined.
