N.C. Fire Chief Dies After Suffering Heart Attack

A North Carolina fire chief who suffered an apparent heart attack after returning home from a brush fire last month died Saturday.
A North Carolina fire chief who suffered an apparent heart attack after returning home from a brush fire last month died Saturday.

Wilson's Mills Fire Chief Richard Leo Barbour, 55, complained of chest pains on Jan. 30, and was taken to Wake Medical in Raleigh for treatment, according to the USFA.

In addition to serving as fire chief, Barbour was the Safety and Health Director for the state and a member of numerous fire and rescue associations including the N.C. Fireman's Association, N.C. Fire Chief's Association, Johnston County Fireman's Association, N.C. Rescue Association, N.C. Special Emergency Response Team, past chairman of the LEPC and an associate with FEMA, according to his obituary in The News-Observer.

Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at Wilson's Mills Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial, with fire department honors, will follow in Knollwood Memorial Cemetery.
