PAOLI, Ind. --

A large fire has swept through the southwest corner of Paoli's downtown square early Saturday, firefighters said.

Fire crews said they were first called to the scene just before 7:30 a.m. They said the fire started in the Old National Bank Building on the west side of Paoli Square. It now houses smaller businesses and apartments.

As many as 12 fire departments have been called to fight the fire, which was still burning strong nearly three hours after it started.

Firefighters said crews are running out of water because they have to get it from other counties.

WLKY News photographers said the fire is affecting other buildings in the square.

Everyone who was in the building when the fire started was able to get out safely, firefighters said.

Officials said that about 10 families have been displaced by the blaze.

Crews have blocked off streets in the area to limit access. The Orange County Sheriff's Department has asked that all residents stay clear of the square.

Paoli is in Orange County, Ind., northwest of Louisville, Ky.
