N.Y. Firefighter Dies in Manhole Rescue Attempt

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- A firefighter died Monday evening after entering a manhole in an attempt to rescue a public works employee, who also was killed. Firefighter John Kelly was overcome by fumes that had also stricken the worker, according to WABC. Kelly was pulled out first, and received cardiopulmonary resuscitation. However, the effort proved fruitless, and he died at Westchester Medical Center, reports indicated.

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- A firefighter died Monday evening after entering a manhole in an attempt to rescue a public works employee, who also was killed.

Firefighter John Kelly was overcome by fumes that had also stricken the worker, according to WABC.

Kelly was pulled out first, and received cardiopulmonary resuscitation. However, the effort proved fruitless, and he died at Westchester Medical Center, reports indicated.

Kelly went into the manhole near the Tarrytown firehouse to rescue DPW employee Anthony Ruggiero. Efforts to revive him also failed.
