Assistant Chief Found Dead in Rhode Island Station

Assistant Chief Edward C. Vanner Jr. was found unresponsive in his office.

Firefighters on a Rhode Island air national guard base are mourning the loss of their assistant chief.

Edward C. Vanner, Jr., 58, was found unconscious and unresponsive in his office at 143d Fire & Emergency Services, Quonset ANG Base R.I.

Despite efforts of base personnel including doctors, they were unable to revive Vanner, according to the USFA.

An autopsy is being performed to determine the cause of death. However, reports indicated it may have been a heart attack. 

Vanner had 23 years experience in the fire service.
