N.Y. Fire Lt. Dies While Exercising at Station

A lieutenant with the Nedrow Fire Department was found unresponsive in the station's exercise room. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

A volunteer lieutenant with the Nedrow (N.Y.) Fire Department died Monday, Nov. 11 from apparent overexertion apparently while working out at the station.

According to the United State Fire Administration (USFA), Lt. James C. Goodman, 52, of Syracuse was found unresponsive in the exercise room at the station at about 9:15 p.m. Monday.

A recording of the dispatch alert said the patient was found unconscious and may not have been breathing when a call for medical assistance was made. The cause of death has not yet been officially reported, according to the USFA.

Goodman was taken to Upstate Community General Hospital where he was pronounced dead. According to his obituary, Goodman was a medic for the New York National Guard as well as a volunteer fire officer with Nedrow. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman.

Surviving Goodman is his wife Christina Giarrusso Goodman, his father James Goodman Sr.; four sisters and several nieces and nephews.

His service will be held at 8:15 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 15 at the Butler-Badman Funeral Home in Syracuse, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in St. James Church. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
